Living in the Andes: Bogota's Seasons, Weather, & Environment

Introduction:

Since Bogotá is both close to the equator and surrounded by the Andes mountains, it has a subtropical, highland climate. While there aren't four seasons, there are a couple: the dry and rainy seasons alternate throughout the year. November is one of the rainiest seasons of the year, and since I bike to work most days, I usually take a rain coat, umbrella, and rain pants! Sometimes it even hails in Bogotá! What other environmental factors make Bogotá the unique city that it is? Let's find out!

What makes this environment special or different?:

Bogotá's environment is particularly special because it is right near the Andeas, which is one of three large mountain ranges that run through the center of Colombia. The part of the Andes that's next to Bogotá, or Bogotá's Hills, forms a beautiful lookout point for hikers and those who are eager to escape the city. Different hikers have created nearly 30 miles of hiking paths, divided into 14 routes, which happen to correspond to the paths used by people during colonial times. They needed to cross the mountains for trade, or to go to worship at catholic and indigenous sanctuaries.
