There are around 10,000 homeless people in Dublin right now, and many other people live in overcrowded apartments with unpleasant conditions. Even as parts of Dublin are transforming into stylish blocks filled with modern apartments and office spaces, many Dubliners can’t afford to take advantage of the new construction.
The government is doing what it can to help. Right outside my window, a new construction project began last month. Under the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness, the project aims to put up three new blocks of apartments to help those in need. While I don’t love hearing the drilling and digging going on each day outside my room, it’s great to know that in a few months, there will be new apartments ready for Dubliners to live in. Hopefully, this is just the first step toward better balancing Dublin’s tech boom and housing needs. Silicon Docks with its shiny buildings represents a step toward the future, but Dublin can’t forget about the needs of the people who already live here.
