Who am I and why am I in Germany?

Hallo! Or should I say, bonjour? My name is Elizabeth Sun and I am from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I spent the first 11 years of my life in Seattle, Washington, though, so I feel equally at home among towering pine trees as I do surrounded by spiky desert cacti. I have also lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Claremont, California, so I'm used to adapting to new places. Living abroad is kind of like moving to a new city in the U.S. because there are a lot of new plants and buildings and people, except for the fact that I am also hearing a different language. This year it is German!

Funnily enough, I actually studied French in college, so let me explain how I come to be writing to you from Saarbrücken, Germany.

Seven years ago, in high school, my family decided to host a German exchange student for a year. I was learning French but my brother and sister were learning German, so my parents thought it would be a great experience for all of us to have a German student come live with us. And it really was a wonderful experience! Clara, our exchange student, joined in every family activity, and she and I became first friends, and then, practically, sisters.

I didn't see Clara again until three years ago when I was studying abroad in Paris.
