Timorese place more emphasis on relationships and take time to stop and talk to friends and family they see on their way somewhere, so are almost always late to things.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I walk to and from school by myself. It is very close. It only takes me two minutes to walk to school.

I eat lunch at home after school. My favorite food is cassava leaves.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school, we usually speak Tetun, but we also learn English and Portuguese. At home, my family speaks our dialect, Tokodede.

In Tetun, we don't say hello, but we greet people depending on the time of day. We say Bondia for Good Morning, Botarde for Good Afternoon and Bonoite for Good Evening.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Some common girls' names at my school are Maria and Antonieta.

Some common boys' names are Jose and Januario.

Although some Timorese names look familiar, they are usually pronounced differently than in the U.S. For example, the name Jose in Timor is pronounced like "zuze." Both j and s can make a hard z sound in Tetun.

My favorite subjects in school are Morals, Math, Physical and Natural Sciences, English and History and Geography.

What is your homework like?:

I have a pretty normal amount of homework and it doesn't take me long to finish it.
