Singapore's Unique Language: Singlish

Introduction:

今天我想谈谈新加坡独特的语言传统:新加坡式英语。

Translation:

Today, I want to talk about Singapore's unique language tradition: Singlish.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Singlish is not simple. Here are some examples:

  • In Chinese, after a sentence, people say ‘ah’, ‘ba’, ‘ba’ and so on. Instead, Singaporeans say ‘lah’, ‘leh’, ‘loh’, etc.
  • In English, we say ‘yes’ or ‘no’, and in Chinese, we say ‘shi’ or ‘bushi’. Instead, Singaporeans say 'can' or 'cannot'. For example: ‘Can I go to the toilet’? Singaporeans say ‘Can lah’.
  • Sometimes people speak multiple languages at the same time. For example: ‘Uncle wo xiang yibei Kopi. ’ Uncle is in English, and Kopi (coffee) is in Malaysian.
