La Paz's Mi Teleférico System

The Mi Teleférico is also deeply connected to the environment. Situated in the midst of the Andes Mountains, La Paz is an incredibly steep and mountainous city. This makes it a very difficult landscape for building roads. In fact, tunnels must often be blasted out of the sides of the mountains. Once built, the roads are often long, windy, easily eroded and sometimes quite dangerous. The Mi Teleférico has the unique ability to operate in the sky, meaning it can bypass much of the steep and difficult terrain here in La Paz. What’s more, the Mi Teleférico operates using electricity, partially provided by solar power. This is now helping to drastically cut down on the levels of smog pollution and carbon emissions here in the city. Plus, solar power is much cheaper than burning gasoline. A one-way ticket on the Mi Teleférico costs only three bolivianos, or about $0.40 USD. A one-way ticket on the bus, however, costs five bolivianos, or about $0.70.

Can you see why the Mi Teleférico is now the most popular way to get around in La Paz?
