Its well-developed senses of smell, touch, hearing and electroreception allow it to be the top predator of the cave streams it lives in, even though it can't see a thing!
The olm is listed as a vulnerable species and is very sensitive to changes in its environment, particularly any kinds of pollution in the cave waters. For example, many toxic chemicals, such as pesticides and fertilizers, are carried underground when it rains and eventually end up in the cave systems. These chemicals can cause big problems for this creature, possibly even leading to its future extinction from certain caves. Due to its relatively small distribution, this could be a big problem for the long term survival of the species.
