The Heliconias grow in an upright position and have cup-shaped flowers that store water for themselves and insects and birds. The plant also has downward-facing flowers that provide nectar for birds.

The greatest threat to this plant is from humans because deforestation disrupts the ecosystem of the Heliconia, possibly even killing the plants themselves along with their habitat if the entire thing is destroyed.
