Food is something that can bring families, friends and loved ones all together. I was really nervous to make new friends in South Africa. However, being able to share a meal with others really helped me bond with people. From having a braai (local barbeque -- pronounced br-eye) and making new friends, to sitting down with a local family and having dinner with them while they told me stories about their country, being able to sit around and share a meal with someone is one of the best ways to learn more about people and their culture.
I am the kind of person who will try anything once, so I have tried it all! From breakfast meats to candies to even weird ice cream! I have taken a picture of every single thing that I have eaten while I've been here. After reading this Field Note, be sure to go check out the extra Album on Food that we've published!
I was really nervous at first because I'm not a big meat eater. However, meat is a huge part of the diet here in South Africa! I have tried every single thing and there are a few things that I haven't enjoyed as much as others. For the most part, I have liked it all though!
