Meet Ocean! She is a Third-Grade Student Living in Bhaktapur, Nepal

What jobs do your parents have?:

In Nepal, it is common for family members to work abroad in different countries and come back to visit occasionally. Ocean's father worked abroad for years and now does some sales work in Nepal. Ocean's mother works with me in the lung health research office! She collects data as a field worker for the reearch project.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

School starts at 9:30 a.m. and finishes by 4:00 p.m. School is open six days a week in Nepal! Only Saturday is off.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Ocean's father takes her to school every morning on his scooter/bike. To get to the school from her house, you have to cross a big crowded highway; so, it is safer for her not to walk.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Ocean eats lunch at home with her parents. She will have some packed food to eat at school, too. There is also a cafeteria at school.

Her favorite foods are chicken or buffalo momos, chowmein and chicken or buffalo burgers. In Nepal, beef is not sold.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school, the teachers teach in Nepali. Students have Nepali class and English is also taught as a subject. Ocean's parents also speak the Newari language, so she can understand some Newari, too. Most people in Bhaktapur are Newari, so Ocean's school also has a Newari curriculum to preserve their culture, language and history.
