Living near Los Angeles, I met people from all over the world. This made me decide that I wanted to travel as much as possible. This desire let me to choose my favorite subject - Anthropology. Anthropologists learn about people, language, food and culture. So what am I doing in Dresden? In a word, research. That means that each week, I ask people questions about energy, migration, religion and what it means to them to be German. Each day is different and exciting. In a typical week, I travel around Saxony the state (like Nebraska) that Dresden is situated in. I like attending political meetings and demonstrations. Sometimes, I travel farther, such as to Belgium or to Austria.
I love being able to research. It's one of my favorite things to do. But sometimes it can be hard living here. Coming from sunny, warm Southern California, Dresden always seems overcast and cold during the winter. While I speak German pretty well, I am always learning new words and sometimes, I just don't know what to say to people. This can make me feel a little shy and uncomfortable. But everyone is really nice, and they encourage me to keep trying. I've decided to try some new hobbies while I am here which will help with my confidence! For instance, I am learning to row and hopefully I will learn to ski as well.
