I came to Singapore for many reasons, but one major reason was to learn about Asian cuisine. Coming from a family that mostly eats Western (European/American) foods, I have never been able to appreciate or even try good Asian food. Now, that’s all I eat, and it is delicious!
The first food I had in Singapore was Chinese food. Singapore's food represents the people who live in here, so Chinese food is the most prevalent. My friend from the US is Chinese-American and she was helpful in telling me which foods to eat during my first week here. Before too long, I could pick and choose myself. Recently, I discovered Indian food, which has become the primary food I eat here!
I did not enjoy some of the food here at first, but within a day (only a day!) I was able to start appreciating the new tastes and expanding my horizons. Indian food is very spicy, but every time I ate something spicy, I could handle more and more! Your tastes adjust to where you are, and now I don’t even want to eat Western food.
The great thing about Singapore is that the food is all prepared in front of you, and it is truly reflected in the taste. Everything I eat is warm, off-the-pot and scrumptious. The hawker stalls are best known for their fast but fresh cooking that keeps you coming back for more.
