Built to Thrive: Taiwan's Unique Environment and Adaptations for Survival

In the summertime, Taiwanese people are always fully covered from head to toe to protect them from the sun. This includes gloves, UV-jackets, sun hats, face masks and long pants. People will also carry an umbrella with them year-round, either for the sun or the rain. Since scooters are a major form of transportation in Taiwan, we also always carry around a full-body rain coat and water shoes in our scooter storage compartments since you never know when it might rain! Lastly, to address concerns about safety and pollution, my school has daily announcements, called the baogao, with a report on the air quality levels and what activities are allowed based on the pollution. Students often wear masks for the entire school day on the worst pollution days.
