One of the things that interested me the most about this study abroad program was that they would allow me to do an internship. An internship is an opportunity for you to work and gain real-life experience for a specific career. During my application, I mentioned that my dream was to build houses that made both people and the environment happy. So, my program coordinator matched me with an organization that does exactly that: Techo!
Techo is a non-profit organization that builds houses for people who live in improper conditions. Most of these families work very hard, but they do not have solid floors, proper doors or even bathrooms in their homes. Everyone deserves to have a warm house with a stable roof and a comfortable bed. So, Techo (which means roof in Spanish), gathers volunteers to build small wooden houses for those who need them the most. These houses are not a permanent solution, but they are a big upgrade for these families.
There are Techo offices in a lot of Latin American countries (18 to be exact). Last year, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and other large countries investigated how their houses can better respond to the climate crisis.
