First, many major Semana Santa events and processionals are hosted by prominent churches in Cartago and San José. For example, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Basilica of Our Lady of Angels) in Cartago is the church that is home of the largest processional.
There are also many superstitions related to this week. Some people believe that it is bad luck to swim in the ocean on Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) or Good Friday, and that if you do it could be more dangerous. There is also a superstition that terremotos (earthquakes) are more likely during Semana Santa.
