Palestinians live all over the world and there is a large community in Houston. I also got to visit Austin, Texas. Austin is smaller than Houston, but it has people from different communities. Austin is the capital of Texas. I visited the capitol building and got to go all over the city. I also visited a book festival there.
One of the saddest things about the history of the United States is slavery. My ancestors were brought to the United States by force. They were forced to work hard in bad conditions. Millions of people like my ancestors were brought from Africa to the United States. Texas has a very bad history with slavery, along with other states. Slavery ended in 1865; however, after that the laws did not start to become fair to my community until the 1964 and 1965. There is still a lot to be done. I was nervous about being mistreated. However, I have made lots of great friends in Texas. I have met wonderful people in College Station where I live. I have also met wonderful people in other cities like Round Rock, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and other cities. I have met people who were interested in my culture and city. I have met people who try to learn more about the history of slavery in the United States. We have talked about what we can do to make America a better place. Living in Texas has got me interested in learning more about the history and culture here. I really want to continue to read books and learn everything that I can about this state.
