Bristol is a very big, old port city, which means that it is a place where people have long walked to get around. Walking is a part of the culture. Unfortunately, because the city is so old, the roads are rarely straight! In the rain, people often stand in shops or under covers and then resume dashing around after the next break in the storm. Many roads are very small, half the width of those in the United States, because they were originally built for horses. Some roads are even from Roman times, when the British Isles were partially ruled by the Roman Empire.
