One of the coolest parts of living in a new country is seeing the ways other people celebrate being alive- how they celebrate birthdays and culture in their own unique environment. While I am familiar with holidays like Christmas and New Year's, the Spanish tradition of Carnival or "Antroxu" was completely new to me. It will be celebrated here in just a few short days, and my school and neighborhood are all a buzz, preparing their costumes and expressing excitement. Suddenly, my students were asking me about my costume and about "pancake day," which sparked some confusion and curiosity in me. So, I decided it was time to ask some questions.
I learned about the Spanish and Asturian tradition of Antroxu, commonly known as Carnival. It takes place in February or early March, depending on when the Christian season of Lent begins. It's a time to celebrate the end of winter, creativity and community, and eat rich foods before Lent begins. Here in Asturias, it is a multi-day celebration involving parades, costumes, rich foods and making jokes.
