Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This week, we have traveled many, many miles! We call days when we are traveling to the next site "transit days." We have had 48 hours of transit in the past week so far. We have also journeyed over 500 miles just this last week!

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

From the start of our trip, we have traveled 3225 nautical miles as of lunch yesterday. After conversion, that is 3,711 miles, which reaches way over the distance of the United States from coast to coast!

How did I get around this week?:

Still getting around by boat! Our journey will continue on this vessel as we collect samples at different sites along the Southern Ocean.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The engineers on the ship gave us tours of the engine room this week. We got to see a bunch of places on the ship that we're not normally allowed to go. We learned a lot about the ship, too. One of the things they discussed is the anti-roll technology on this ship. This technology essentially has a U-shaped container, which is the width of the ship and has a bunch of water in it. As the ship rolls, the water sloshes around in the container.
