On average, I am going up and down around 30 flights of stairs per day! Now imagine doing that with big waves! Because of the movement of the ship with the waves, it is easy to lose your balance. One saying that you hear around the ship is “three points of contact.” That means that you need to have three parts of your body touching the ship. So going up stairs, you need to have at least one hand on the railing and your feet are the other two points of contact.
Moving around on a boat can be challenging but fun! One thing I have noticed is that my abs are sore from trying to keep my balance in the waves. I also felt seasick at the beginning of the voyage. Seasickness can make you tired, give you a headache, make you nauseous, or make it had to focus. It is different for everyone. People take medication to help with seasickness and eventually most people acclimate to the movement of the ship. The motion of the ship is definitely fun! You can get the sensation in your stomach of going down a hill on a rollercoaster with the big waves. Things on the ship slide around with the waves too. During one big wave on this voyage, we were having a movie night in the lounge and three people slid all the way to the other side of the room, large arm chairs and all!
Learning to move around on a ship is a part of the culture of seagoers! They call learning how to walk around on a moving ship “getting your sea legs!”
