Coming to Konstanz

Location:
Konstanz, Germany
Journal Entry:

Konstanz may be a small city, but it offers a wide variety of attractions to its residents and visitors.

Having had limited travel experiences before college, I have really come to know the world in Turkey, Greece and Germany over the past ten years.  But this trip has become my longest stay in a foreign country yet – and my favorite!  My wife Jenny and I are living in an apartment along the Rhine River that sits opposite the old walled city of Konstanz. On a clear day from our balcony, you can see the Swiss Alps on the other side of the Bodensee, a massive lake that forms the border for Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Five months have already passed since Jenny and I came to Konstanz. It has been the base point from which all the research has been conducted for my dissertation on the origins of science fiction and fantasy movies in the German and Austrian film industry. Berlin, Vienna, Munich – these are just a few of our destinations so far, and there will soon be more to come!

But what is most irreplaceable about our time abroad are the parts of these trips that remind us of the fact that, for almost everyone we meet on this journey, this is everyday life.
