Madrid is a city of 6.55 million citizens, all of whom are constantly on the move between Madrid's many homes, schools, cultural centers, stores and streets. Using a blend of walking, metros, buses, cars, motorbikes and rentable scooters, Madrileños (people who live in Madrid) are able to easily and affordably get to where they need to go.
For young people in Madrid, the most common way of getting around is via the city's impressive metro system. Created 100 years ago, the metro is only 20 euros a month for unlimited rides for young people under 26 years old. This is extremely affordable compared to other cities. For example, in New York City, the same pass would cost about $130 USD. Additionally, walking is extremely popular for distances of about a mile or less within Madrid's city center. Driving cars is less common due to environmental limits and higher costs.
