さよなら from Japan

And growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, trying new things and meeting different kinds of people.

I know it can be intimidating to interact with locals, especially if you’re not confident in the Japanese language. But you don’t need to speak perfect Japanese to get to know people, here! It is especially important that you don't worry about making mistakes. Japanese people will genuinely appreciate your effort to communicate, even if you can only say a few words in their language.

In fact, I made most of my Japanese friends just by introducing myself in English. I simply said, “Hello, I’m Denmark. What’s your name?”

Many Japanese universities have English conversation clubs and student groups that encourage cross-cultural exchange. Both Japanese and English are spoken at these events. So, join one of these clubs, go to the events and keep showing up! People will notice your consistency—and friendships will naturally follow.

Be sure to seize any opportunities that will allow you to meet locals and immerse yourself in Japanese culture. In Japan there are so many fascinating things that you can see and places that you can go to. I encourage you to explore as much as possible.

Have fun. I know I did!
