I participated in this activity with fellow international students, Japanese university students and also Kana-san, one of the adult supervisors for KyoTomorrow Academy.
6. Was it hard to plant the rice?
No, it was easy! We were each given a big chunk of seedlings. Then we planted three seedlings at a time into the mud. I think for some people maintaining their balance was the real challenge. Several people fell over but they were okay. We all laughed about it. I'll admit it almost happened to me!
7. Did you get muddy or wet while working in the field?
Of course. That was the best part about doing the rice planting.
8. What was the most fun part of the day?
The rice planting!
I also really enjoyed connecting with others and working together as a team in the rice fields. From laughter to shared enthusiasm over this unique experience, we truly built a strong sense of camaraderie.
9. Did you learn anything new about Japanese farming?
Yes I learned that you must plant the rice seedlings between 8-10 inches apart from one another. Also, it is important to plant the seedlings at a good enough depth in the mud. A few inches is good.
10. Would you like to plant rice again someday?
Of course. I would definitely do this again someday.
