The Philippines, much like other Southeast Asian countries, is well known for being welcoming and kind to visitors. A motorcyclist passing by might nod his head to you and sing out, “Good morning, ma’am!” A new friend will greet you with a hug before extending the gift of a delicious rice-based snack. Before you leave the house, your family and neighbors will ensure you are well-fed. They might even remind you, "Darahon mo ang payong," or “Remember to bring your umbrella," to protect against the harsh sun or sudden rains.
There are many deep Tagalog words that reflect Filipino values of love and community. "Bayanihan" means unity and cooperation, used to describe neighbors or communities helping one another. "Kapwa" is a word for the connection all humans share, and our sense of understanding and togetherness. "Malasakit" is a phrase meaning genuine concern for others’ health and wellbeing. Each of these terms can be applied not only to friends and family, but to neighbors and strangers, too.
