The Fruit Kingdom

Because Taiwan is tropical, subtropical and temperate in different areas, they grow a lot of fruit. On many hikes, I have passed fruit on the ground -- mostly mangoes and starfruit -- because the trees naturally thrive here on their own. Unfortunately, you can't pick up the fruit you see on the side of the trail because it may have been there for a long time. But don't worry, the monkeys will probably eat it!

Fruit is also very connected to local culture. Pink guava is a major export of Changhua County, where I live. Fruit is so popular that at an intersection with four corners, three of the corners may be taken up by competing fruit vendors. And they all have frequent customers! I teach English in Taiwan, and the other English teachers frequently gift me pomelos, guavas and small clementines. My local friends will also gift me fruit. It is a very common way to show goodwill.
