I have had to advocate for myself in ways that I never did anywhere else, and learn the nuances of living in a foreign culture while staying committed to my own self-development.
This journey has been wonderful, albeit fraught with challenges. Homesickness, limited resources and difficulty communicating with both my Moldovan and American counterparts have been prominent struggles during my experience abroad. I have dealt with difficulty by asking for help when I needed it and embracing the challenges that come my way. I have come to know Moldova deeply and intimately, and am lucky to be surrounded by a kind and welcoming community that never hesitates to sacrifice their time and energy for my sake. Moldova has a long history at the crossroads of cultures and civilizations, and I am honored to have added to the diverse tapestry of peoples that makes Moldova great. I will forever be grateful for the kindness and hospitality I have received here, and for the way Moldovans have truly embraced me as one of their own.
Another important realization I have come to is how privileged I am to be an American citizen. I have been given every opportunity to succeed because of my citizenship, which has given me a new perspective on the role America should have in the world. As one of the most prosperous countries in the world, it is our responsibility to give every resource we can to aid and uplift communities facing hardship around the globe. Small efforts have a big impact, and my time in Moldova has shown me how even a small American presence can deeply change hearts and minds in another country. I have gained a newfound commitment to public service and a desire to be a positive representative of the United States on the global stage.
