Getting around Japan: A lot of Walking and Trains

Introduction:

In Nishinomiya, Japan, transportation is an important part of daily life. People use trains, walking and biking to move around the city fast and efficiently.

How do people get around?:

In the Nishinomiya area, most people use trains like the Hankyu Kobe Line and JR Kobe Line. Many also walk or bike to stations. IC cards (Train/Bus cards) such as the ICOCA card, make travel easy and cheap. All you have to do is tap your ICOCA card on a gate, and your good to go!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

The first day or two it was a bit hard to understand, but I quickly got used to it. I was suprised by how quiet, and organized everything was compared to public transportation in the United States.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Yes! People in Japan value highly being on time and following rules. When waiting to get on the train, people stand in lines, wait their turn and stay quiet. People stay quiet because a lot of people are tired from work, and phone calls are not allowed on trains. The trains are very clean, and people help keep it that way.
