Fortunately, the Vietnamese have been extremely welcoming and are happy to have me join them in sports, special events and meals. I play tennis with a group of Vietnamese men each afternoon from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Although we can't communicate very well, we enjoy each other's company with smiles and bonding over sports. I also play soccer with a group of my students twice a week, typically on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Sports have always played a major role in my life, and I'm grateful that I've been able to stay active in Vietnam.
The people here are so friendly and outgoing. Often times, people will invite us to eat dinner with them or even join special events and parties. Last week, a friend invited me to a work party, which included games, karaoke and delicious Vietnamese food. I sang "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys. Karaoke is a popular activity in Can Tho.
Playing sports, attending parties and eating meals with locals have helped me integrate into the community and immerse myself in the culture here. Most of my previously unanswered questions have been answered, and I now feel very comfortable in my temporary home. Of course, there is always more to learn, and I continue to have new experiences every day. The welcoming people of the Mekong Delta have helped me find community here and feel a sense of place in a foreign land. There's nothing quite like Delta hospitality!
