Bienvenido (Welcome) to Alcalá de Henares!

I studied children’s books, just like you do in your English Language Arts classes! The only difference was that all the books I studied were in Spanish! While I did my research. I explored Madrid, the capital city of Spain, and I got to know more about Spanish language and culture.

That was my first time in Spain, and it made me realize one summer abroad (aka, not in the United States) was not going to be enough. So I applied for another grant, this time to teach English in the Canary Islands, which are kind of like the Hawaii of Spain. During the 2019-2020 school year, I was working with infantil, or preschool, students on their English language skills, and living on the desert island of Fuerteventura. It was quite the adventure!

But, like many things in early 2020, my time in Spain was suddenly cut short as global health became a concern. I rushed home, and lost my last four months in Spain as a result. But I wasn’t going to let that stop me!

So here I am, back in Spain for my third time, this time in Alcalá de Henares. Alcalá is in the comunidad autónoma, or autonomous community, of Madrid, so I’m very close to the city where I first fell in love with Spain! You can think of it like I’m living in New York State but not in New York City. While I’m here, I’m getting to do all the things I love--teaching English in a public school, studying Spanish at the university, and researching children’s books with the Madrid library system.

I can’t wait to see what other, unexpected adventures this country brings me this time!
