When I first realized I wanted to go to Germany, I had no idea what I wanted to do. After a few summers completing internships and volunteering, I’m still not too sure, but I am positive about one thing: learning a second language has done nothing but open doors to new opportunities.

Late in high school is when I started to discover stuff I was interested in and it was as simple as trying out new things. There was a program through my school to work with a Boston City Councilor, so after being accepted I worked in City Hall answering phone calls and trying to help citizens with their problems. Some days I would try and figure out why street lights weren’t turning on and others I would be out collecting money for local Christmas parties.

I really loved doing this! It was awesome working with the local government, but I really enjoyed helping others. After moving on to college I ended up securing an internship with a company that worked both with political candidates and non-profit organizations, both of which focus on helping people in their community. It felt so good to be working directly on issues I cared about.
