I’ve always dreamed of trying authentic paella in Valencia, drinking from the aqueduct in Segovia and strolling through Retiro Park in Madrid. I’m so thankful that I have gotten to experience all of these things, and that I’ve been able to make a home for myself in the middle of this beautiful place.
I think the topic that I’ve learned the most about while being here has been myself! The process of picking up and moving to another continent was stressful and confusing to say the very least. However, it taught me about my needs - what I need to have and do in order to live comfortably in a space with other people, what I need to do in order to be self-sufficient and organized and what I need to do to make sure that I feel happy and fulfilled. I learned how to live so far away from my family and everything I’ve known (though I think I’m still learning how to do this). Teaching, volunteering and exploring new places have shown me where my interests lie, and what I want to pursue in a personal and professional sense.
The biggest lesson that I’ve learned from living in another country is that I can do it! It’s a huge feat, but it’s entirely possible if you work hard enough, plan ahead, and stay open to new opportunities and challenges. My Fulbright year has truly been the most valuable experience of my life - and it's only half-way over!
I’ve fallen in love with Spain, and actually, hope to stay here for another year to pursue my Master’s in Bilingual and Multicultural Education! It’s been such a pleasure to write about my experiences each week for you all. I hope that you’ve learned something new about Spain, and have been inspired to travel and learn abroad!
