When you receive the Gilman Scholarship, you’re a Gilman for life! I received the Gilman in 2020 and I still get to attend Gilman events. I was selected to participate in a seminar in Washington D.C. in June 2024 about Food Security. It was an amazing time!
I want to leave you with something small that I have learned. I believe that the world would be a better place if we all shared just a little bit more compassion with each other. I believe that we can be part of the generations that make a difference in the world. When I was in college I was President of the African Student Association. It was so great to celebrate my Ghanaian culture and embrace other African countries' cultures. This is just one example of how we can show more love to one another. When you step out of your familiar environment, you often see firsthand the challenges others face and learn to appreciate the diversity of human experiences. Traveling encourages empathy because you can relate to people’s struggles, joys, and values, even if they are different from your own. Take a risk and book that ticket! You won't regret it.
