Botswana Communities have Tribal Roots

Introduction:

The Totems in Botswana are a symbol of regional pride. The Totem is decided upon by tribal leaders and often are animal representations. These animal symbols or totems are often displayed in the form of statues in the village center, on shirts of local football jersies, on flags or on letterhead for official documents.  Different tribes and locations are guided by tribal goals and priorities. Job creation and sustainment has been a goal that many been on the minds of many tribes in Botswana. The high unemployment rates of communities affect everyone and many efforts are being made to change things.

What community need did I learn about?:

It is well known that unemployment affects all people of the region I live.  The global economy is changing and many countries are doing well if they have industries with manufacturing, entertainment and technology, among many others. Botswana has not been able to be fast to implement planning to participate in these industries. This leaves people in small villages to move toward small retail stands, building trades and yard work. Due to high unemployment, the pay for these laborers is very low.  The jobs that do pay well are ones that typically require a college education. These include teachers, business owners, medical professionals, land management and government administration.
