Breakfast has always been my favorite meal. Pancakes, eggs, toast, waffles, bagels, and more! There’s so much to choose from, and it’s all delicious. Thankfully, Malaysia is known for having delicious food, but I was still sad that I had to say my goodbyes to my favorite breakfast bagels and say hello to rice and chicken.
Although I like rice, I was not used to eating rice as the first meal of my day. But in my small town, a typical breakfast consists of rice plus a protein, such as chicken or fish. Sometimes people will add vegetables to their meal. There are no restaurants nearby that serve Western food for breakfast. And eating is an important part of social life in Malaysia, so I decided to dive in and try to embrace eating nasi ayam (rice with chicken) for breakfast.
Over time, I grew more used to these breakfasts, and I love getting to start the morning by sharing a meal with the teachers at my school. During breakfast, we catch up on school news and chat about lessons and our personal lives, and it has made my friendships with other teachers much stronger.
I also learned that there are many different ways of eating in Malaysia.
