When you think of cafeteria food, what comes to mind? I don't know about you, but when I think of my middle school's cafeteria food, it does not make me feel particularly hungry. However, since I have come to South Korea, I look forward to my lunch every day! They offer generally well-balanced, delicious meals every day, so the students have the energy to study.
Some of my favorite cafeteria lunches so far have been stir-fried pork lettuce wraps with spicy cold noodles, Korean fried chicken and fried cheese balls and solidified blood sausage soup (known as Sun-dae-guk). The first few meals are classic dishes for people who like Korean food, but this was my first time trying solidified blood sausage. The sausage is filled with meat, solidified blood, and chewy glass noodles. It sounds like it would be gross, and I have to admit I was very hesitant to try it. I know that in America, it is uncommon to eat animal blood in any form, but it is common in many other countries -- it is called black pudding in the UK! I took a bite of the sausage, and it was surprisingly really good! I really liked the chewy texture of the noodles in the sausage, and it didn't taste like what I expected blood to taste like. There was no iron-y taste. It was just a very savory and flavorful bite.
