Lesotho’s Mountains, People and Environment

Lesotho sends a lot of water to South Africa, which means that Basotho people do not always have enough water. Like the rest of the world, Lesotho also experiences climate change. Temperatures are rising which makes it harder for crops to grow.

Another challenge is called "over-grazing." As you know, many people in Lesotho own animals such as cows, sheep and goats. These animals eat grass to survive, and oftentimes the grass can't grow back fast enough.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Even though there are many challenges that people in Lesotho experience everyday, the Basotho are extremely adaptive. Life isn't always easy, but people find ways to overcome hardships and find happiness. For example, farmers in Lesotho take care of the soil so that they can continue growing food for generations to come. People also collect rain water in some areas so that even when it doesn't rain for several weeks, they still have clean water to use. New trees are being planted constantly so that we have clean air and wood to use for fires. This is very important because Basotho rely on fire for cooking and staying warm in the winter. To solve the problem of over-grazing,  shepherds have their animals eat grass from different areas so that it has time to grow back healthy.

In general, Lesotho is very community-oreiented. Any challenge that may arise is tackled by the whole community, not just one person or one family. Working together to solve problems makes it much easier to overcome challenges. I often think about how the US could learn this from Lesotho.
