In Hungary, history and culture are some of the most important subjects. This means there are many medieval shows, museums, and exhibits highlighting the traditions, clothing, tools, and foods. Hungary has been invaded and occupied many times and therefore it is important to them to distingush their history by bringing it to life today. While in America we have events such as Medieval Times, the show I saw at Visegrad Castle is based on actual events that took place at this castle. These modern shows are more like time machines taking both the audience and the performers back in time. The interactiveness of the shows create collaboration between local Hungarians and the visiting tourists such as myself. This allows for sharing and appreciation of the traditions.
This show also creates a sense of community between the performers. I noticed that several of the performers had massive grins on their faces while dueling. Despite the heavy protective garb and weapons they moved with joy and ease. They must really love what they get to do and the people they perform with. I also noticed that the lead performer had his daughter on the side line. She was also dressed in a medieval dress and had brought along her stuffed animal. At the end of the show she took his hand and lead the final procession around the arena. This shows me this is a family-oriented group that wants everyone to participate.
Food is also an important part of the Hungarian lifestyle. Everywhere I have gone there is always good food and good conversation. Having a meal as part of this tradition is no surprise. Food is a way of showing hospitality and creating community.
