Lunar New Year: This holiday and the Chinese zodiacs according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar are also celebrated in Japan. Unlike China and other Asian countries, Japan places more importance on celebrating January 1st as the start of the New Year.
Coming-of-Age Day (2nd Monday of January): This holiday celebrates the people who turn 20 years old in the New Year. The local district government office will host a formal congratulatory ceremony for the new young adults who come dressed in kimono (both men and women) or suits (for men only).
Festivals: In Japan, there are many different kinds of matsuri (Japanese cultural festivals).
- Hanabi (fireworks): The main event of this festival is the firework show in the evening.
- Seasonal: There are festivals themed around the season and weather, such as yuki-matsuri (snow festival) in Hokkaido or hanami (flower viewing festival).
- Regional: Some festivals are unique to certain prefectures. For example the Onabashira log-riding festival in Suwa, Nagano only happens once every seven years, with the next one scheduled in April 2022.
- School Culture Festival (November 3): This is a day where the school or university allows the public to enter and the students set up game booths or display their recent school projects to their parents and the community, similar to the way in which American schools would have science fairs or an open-house event.
- Food: At festivals, you can always find snacks at food stalls or food trucks.
