Taiwan's End of Lunar New Year Festival: Lantern Festival

If it lands both sides down, it means 'no', and if it lands both sides up, it means 'maybe.' People in Penghu also make turtle shaped foods and create large turtles out of different things (some examples are bags of rice, cabbages and ocean debris).

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The Penghu community creates turtle shaped items and foods during Lantern Festival because they are considered good luck in Penghu. The people at the temple create turtles of rice or cabbage as a way to honor the turtles, hoping for good luck and abundance in the new lunar year. After Lantern Festival is over, the rice that the turtle was made with is distributed throughout the village the temple is in, and it is considered 'lucky rice.'

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

I do think that Lantern Festival in Penghu is connected to the environment. A lot of times, the turtles that are made at the temples are made out of local ingredients. One temple regularly makes their turtle out of cabbage because the village it is in is known for its amazing cabbage. Some turtles are made of ocean debris to bring awareness to ocean pollution. I also think that Penghu Lantern Festival does not release lanterns into the air because of the environmental impact!
