Subcultures have always existed. Underground music scenes, school cliques, radical ways of living, they all tend to start the same way. People who feel out of place somewhere decide to build something of their own. These groups have often emerged through similar dissatisfactions with society, each trying to create conditions to meet their unique needs. This week I’ll tell you about a very interesting community in Denmark called Christiania, an anarchist community tucked inside one of the world's most orderly countries.
Christiania exists as a direct pushback against mainstream Danish society. Its people wanted freedom of expression, a thriving arts and culture scene, and a place where you could just be yourself without judgment or pressure to fit in.
Within Denmark, there’s this deeply ingrained social rule called “Janteloven”. This basically refers to the unspoken pressure not to stand out or think you are anything special. So, if you ever come here, you’ll notice right away that most people follow a similar dress code. This usually consists of dark or neutral colors and most importantly, a trenchcoat.
