Hello, everyone! I've made it to the Azores! I'm living on an island called Faial. It has the nickname "Ilha Azul" which means The Blue Island. The reason for this nickname is the beautiful blue flowers that grow all around the island. Hydrangeas are so famous here that you can find pictures of them on postcards and souvenirs. But there's something surprising about these flowers: they aren't actually from the Azores! In this article, we will learn about these flowers and how they became a tourist attraction on the island!
Hydrangeas are bushes with large clusters of bright flowers and lots of petals. You may see them occasionally in California, but they are everywhere here in Faial. These flowers are loved because they bloom for a very long time, and their petals can change colors! Most of the hydrangeas here are blue, because of the type of dirt they live in. In other places outside of the Azores, they may be pink or purple! When they begin to stop blooming for the year, the flowers turn a pale yellow or white. Hydrangeas can normally be seen blooming from May until October here in the Azores.
