Hi, I’m Sara Morris, and I’m a physical research scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder, Colorado. I am one of the U.S. Coordinators for MOSAiC, and also part of the Atmosphere Science Team. I started working on MOSAiC about a year ago, but I have been working in the Arctic for the last eight years. Through my work in the field, I’ve become well versed in organizing and initiating logistical efforts to get our gear and people up to the top of the world: the Arctic.

For example, I worked with the Atmosphere team to develop and build a platform that would hold and power our instruments during the MOSAiC expedition. We ended up creating three large metal sled structures. In the process of creating these instrument sleds, we had to think about how heavy the sled would be (it had to be light enough for two people to push it) and also how we would maneuver the sled across the ice and snow (we would have to attach skis to the sled for it to slide across the ice). In building these sleds, we also had to determine how large they could be – we couldn’t have sleds bigger than the container we were shipping them in!
