A lucky few have enough money and resources to build a storage tank which they fill with water that they have to buy and have delivered by a tanker. However, women in the families that do not have storage tanks in their homes spend many hours every day walking many miles to the village well or reservoir to fill their pots. Another way villagers conserve water is by using the ash from their cooking stoves, instead of soap, to clean their dishes. Less water is necessary to rinse the dishes which get just as clean with ash as they would with soap.
Even when things in your life seem completely unrelated it’s possible to connect the dots. My journey has not been a traditional one and most people my age are closer to retirement than to starting a new adventure. During my Fulbright project, I will visit interesting places, talk to new people, learn about their cultures and traditions and practice the languages I am studying. I do all this in Los Angeles, too, but it’s also fun to do it in a different part of the world.
