The Peace Corps Volunteer Experience

Photos

During a trip to Dakar, some friends and I took the opportunity to get our nails done. Such a luxury! In our villages, we do little in the way of self-care so a little pampering went a long way.
During training sessions, we are taught some basic healthy food practices that we can then in turn share with the people in our communities. Today was canning day!
An artist hosted a session on painting murals. This is a common PC volunteer project as it can involve the community or a kids club, is relatively simple and inexpensive and can wordlessly communicate positive health behaviors.
My friends Thomas and Jacob got matching outfits made. Many people form close, life-long friendships in Peace Corps.
During our pre-service and in-service training periods, in addition to language classes, we spent many hours in classrooms learning from local instructors about Senegal, PC, our respective programs and how to live in our villages.
We hosted an American culture fair for our counterparts. My friends Jessica and Lindsay made an Oreo Cheesecake for the food table.
Some of our work counterparts in our villages came to the PC training center with us to learn about our program and how we could help their communities.
After a few months in our respective villages, we all came back to the PC training center to learn more strategies to implement PC goals in our communities, now that we had a better idea about them.
