Visiting a Homeschool Classroom in South Africa

Introduction:

The way you think and the way you look at the world can be greatly influenced by where and how you grew up. All around the world, children are exposed to different foods, cultures, languages, styles and more. How do you think you would be today if you had grown up without electricity? Without cell phones? Without video games? For some kids around the world, even in the United States, this is how they grew up. Think about how different you would have grown up if you did not have the things you have.

After you go through this Field Note in class, please think about the ways you might be different now if you didn't have any electricity, cell phones or video games.

This week, I presented my PowerPoint about the United States to a homeschool class. Then, I was able to spend about an hour going over the questions below. All the answers come straight from the kids themselves!

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

They answered that for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they will sometimes have mielie pap (pronounced mee-lee pop). For breakfast, they will have it with sugar and milk, but for lunch and dinner, they will have it with stews and meat.

I was able to try mielie pap in the classroom, and it tasted just like grits!
