Small Island, Close Communities

Introduction:

A plethora of different types of communities can be found among Samoa's islands. These communities are found within families, friends, schools, clubs and churches. The church communities are an integral part of Samoan life. I learned a lot about the church community at the All Saints Anglican Church where I lived during the final month of my semester abroad when I was doing my independent research project. The members of the church community treat one another as family, and I felt welcomed by everyone who attended the church.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about the Christian community in Samoa and how it relies on the participation of its members to keep the group intact and to continue the teachings of the church.

Why does the community have this need?:

The church community seeks to share the Christian faith and spread awareness of their religion to others. Samoans believe that church is a valuable way to connect families within the community and instill religious beliefs.

Is this need being met? How?:

The families I met were very active in church-related events. I found the church community to be a group full of energetic, loving people who foster an open atmosphere of care and friendship towards all.
