My friend joined this club about two weeks before I did and was the only foreigner, so he was nervous to be in it alone. One day, he asked me to come along. I love music, so it did not take long for me to love drumming, and in two weeks, my name was on the board of performers, and I had officially joined the club!
I am mostly learning about traditional drumming techniques. Since I am new to drumming, I am learning how to play the sogo. This is a small circle drum attached to a wooden handle. When I'm drumming, I hold the sogo in my left hand and hit the drum with a stick in my right hand.
Korean drumming dates back through multiple kingdoms, and so does the reason for Korean drumming. Like most things in Korea, drumming is said to have started in the Joseon dynasty. People drum for many reasons, from playing folk music to performing fancy court music.
All people, old and young, love drumming here! Older people love to take their grandchildren to watch people drum and remember when they were younger and they did the same thing.
