There are many popular foods in France. There is the baguette, the crepe, the mature cheeses like roquefort, and the Croque-Monsieur (Ham and Cheese Sandwich). Every one of these dishes is enjoyed in France, but the local French natives did not introduce me to any of these popular foods first. My native French friends excitedly talked about Galette des Rois (A "King cake").
I tried a typical Galette des Rois with frangipane inside the pastry. Frangipane is a creme that gives the dish a sweet taste, while the Galette des Rois (a type of pastry) gives it a savory taste.
I did not know what to expect! I was given a slice by my friend, Sam, who discussed at length that I should try this amazing treat. As I held the cake in my hand, I thought, "What if I don't like it? Will my new French friends hate me? What if I'm allergic?" All of those thoughts ran across my mind. I became anxious.
However, I knew I had come here to try new things, so I shook off the nerves and took a small bite. I smiled instantly. Galette des Rois is my new favorite treat! Luckily, there is a local bakery around the corner that sells individual boxes.
