 1. Bread

One of the things Europe is known for is its bread, especially the fluffy French bread and dense Germanic ryes. However, in Hungary and Eastern European countries, breads taste a little different. The legacy of the Soviet Union and the communist era of Hungary’s history still impacts the country in small ways. One of them is the bread here. Bread in Hungary is nothing to write home about. In fact, it is very boring! It is not very tasty and not very special (spoiler: neither is the cheese). Even though it seems like just a disappointing detail, it is actually because of the Soviet era. During the 50 years that Hungary was part of the Soviet Union, the country was very poor, especially in rural Hungary. To save money, Hungarians would make very, very simple bread to have with meals which were usually soups or stews. The bread would be used as a utensil instead of a spoon to soak up the soup, that way every drop of food could be eaten and nothing would be wasted! The bread was very basic, usually consisting of just flour, yeast, water and a little salt, if they could afford it. A lot of the bread made in Hungary today is still simple, and the really tasty bread is imported from other parts of Europe!
